Aerospace Mechanics- A Brief Introduction

Aerospace mechanics, otherwise called Aerospace CNC machining intends to promote and modernize engineering in aerospace. The machines are used to manufacture small and heavy parts that contribute to working aerospace machinery models. CNC machining utilize several types of raw materials depending on the user requirements.

The modern airplane engineering is capable of manufacturing air planes for commercial, defense, and private uses.

Components Manufactured For Aerospace Industry

The following parts are heavily used and are in demand in the aerospace industry. These include:

  • Actuators
  • Discs
  • Power transferring parts (shafts)
  • Minor parts that contribute to cabin construction
  • Seats and upholstery
  • Metal frames

The machinery for aero planes and other aerospace manufacturing are completely different. They’re heavy machines, which demand high capital investment. Moreover, such machines demand expert machine operator, who can efficiently manage the production.

Parts are manufactured using machinery for aero planes and assembled in the aircrafts manually. This further demands labor.

Certifications Needed For Aerospace Manufacturing

The production of aerospace parts and components require perfect plans and manufacturing execution. Failure or lacking quality in the manufacturing process can result in accidents and loss to the nation. Therefore, the higher authorities have imposed requirement of several certifications for those who want to get into aerospace machining.

Some notable certifications include AS9100, ISO 9001, ITAR, etc. Industries found lacking these certifications will get into legal issues including heavy penalty, fines, imprisonment, etc. depending on the rules.

However, industries engaged with mere prototyping don’t necessarily have to obtain these certifications. That’s because the prototypes are restricted to the design part and don’t contribute to poor manufacturing.

Types Of Materials Used In Manufacturing

The following materials are primarily used in aerospace CNC machining:

Titanium Alloys

The reasons for choosing this material include tremendous strength and durability. These features contribute to perfect parts production. Strong and durable parts are the key to reducing accidents and risk of accidents.

Most industries involved in defense airplane engineering utilize titanium alloys for an outstanding defense product. Although the price will rise, but those who’re not looking to compromising on the quality often prefer this material.

Aluminum Alloys

Another variant of alloy is aluminum, which helps bring down the manufacturing cost. However, buyers will have to compromise on the overall quality. The weight will decrease including the durability and strength. Furthermore, aluminum is poses health risks when heats up.

Parts and components manufactured of aluminum alloys are often soft and can be bent easily. The conductivity is somewhat less, hence avoided in electrical components production.

Plastic

High grade plastic is often used to make pipes, interiors, etc. It’s used to reduce vibration (vibration absorbers) and sealing the edges. Plastic helps reduce the weight while offering strength. However, it’s highly intolerant to high temperatures and hence not suited for components that need to be placed near the engine or other critical sections of the aerospace product.

Plastic products are very cheap and easy to manufacture. Therefore, the cost of replacing the broken part is very less. Attractive designs and appearance of plastic items is possible, unlike alloys.
